2011 Favorites – Assignment & Personal Photos

2011 was an interesting year, with a lot of changes. The collection of images in the gallery below is the best way for me to share that. I’ve been putting together galleries of my favorite images for the past seven years, and this gallery looks completely different than any other gallery I have shared before, [...]
2011 Favorites – Mobile (iPhone 4) Photos

Exactly a year ago I finally decided to break down and get an iPhone 4 (my first iPhone). One of my favorite things about this phone is the camera and huge variety of photo editing/sharing apps that are available for it. I’ve had several phones with cameras before this one, and always found myself [...]

Auburn upsets No. 10 South Carolina

Thoughts, photo gallery and gear used on assignment by Flashnick Visuals, LLC owner/photographer Brett Flashnick as he covered Auburn’s upset of No. 10 South Carolina for the Associated Press.
Over the Double Rainbow

A major storm rolled through Columbia, SC yesterday afternoon while we were editing images after an early morning assignment for an editorial client. Thankfully we only lost power for about 10 seconds, and had no other damage. After it was all over Brett saw this amazing double rainbow outside. He grabbed the Canon 5D MKII [...]
Viva Nash Vegas

Some thoughts and photographs from our recent travels to Nashville, Tennessee minus the Country Music. Including our visit to the closing weekend of the Warhol Live exhibit, the Parthenon at Centennial Park, and the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.
Beginning the National September 11 Memorial

Four years ago Brett Flashnick was asked to photograph the first of many structural beams for the National September 11 Memorial and Museum as they rolled out of Owen Steel Company Inc., in Columbia, S.C. on September 10, 2007. Two massive, freshly painted I-beams were loaded onto a 50-foot flat bed trailer for their journey across the United States to Ground Zero in New York City.
The Perseverance of Storytelling
The videos in this post about National Geographic photographer Sam Abell and Ira Glass of “This American Life” are a good reminder of why it’s important to work hard and persevere through the rough times of developing your craft. Whether its telling stories with photographs, video, or words. To become proficient you have to dedicate yourself to creating a large volume of work, and to become a master like Sam Abell you have to continue creating that volume for decades.
USA Today Mobile Clip

Just wanted to share a quick screenshot from the USA Today iPhone App. The image below is from the recent Gullah-Geechee project that I worked on with writer Larry Copeland. It was originally published on April 21, 2011. I guess the iApp is the new equivalent to going to the paper box in the morning [...]
Published – U.S. Army Toughens Fitness Test

Yesterday afternoon, I was fortunate enough to be the only photographer for a civilian media outlet on hand for a closed demonstration of the U.S. Army’s newly revised fitness tests for soldiers. Back in the days of print, I would wake up and head to the news stand to get a copy of whatever publication [...]
It Keeps Snowing

A photo gallery of snow photographs of the Broad River and Saluda River during the snow storm on January 10, 2011.
Winter Fest Photography Mini-Workshop

One of the great things about digital photography is that the cameras have become so advanced they can do a lot of the work for us, but thats also a tremendous drawback, because we tend to be lazy and forget the basic fundamentals of taking a good photograph.
A White Christmas (almost)

Not sure when I would ever see snow around the holidays in Columbia ever again (even though it was minimal) I took my cameras out for a ride, and this is what I saw.

Palmetto Portraits Project IV

Looking back on my email box, I found the first correspondence letting me know that I had been selected to participate in fourth series of the Palmetto Portraits Project a year ago today. Less than five days from now, on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, the exhibit will open to the public with a reception at [...]
Coastal Catharsis

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to spend some time on the coast at one of my favorite places in the world, my friend Charles’ river house on Fenwick Island. The best thing about Fenwick is that it is private, and with the exception of about 5 houses which are all owned by [...]
Uncorking Product Shots

I didn’t really have any actual Spanish music on my iPod when I went into the studio last night for the Spring 2009 Bottle Shoot for Spanish Vines, so Buena Vista Social Club had to suffice, to get me in the mood (yes I know its Cuban, not Spanish, but the vibes are similar, and [...]
48-hours at the Lady in Black

The clock showed it was 2am, as I made way home to Columbia in the back seat of Mary Ann’s car early Sunday morning, following the 60th running of the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, in Darlington, SC. I was completely drained from two non-stop days of making my way around the “Lady in Black” [...]
The after-show glow…

As I sat on the porch where I currently live, listening to the water fall in the Koi pond, and trying to catch up on growing email inbox this morning, I ran across a facebook message from a few weeks ago that new friend and fellow artist Anastasia Chernoff sent, after visiting my photo show, the [...]
My Artista Vista show “Symbology”

I believe that our culture is founded on, and formed by symbols that enable us to connect what we can see with those things that can only be understood by our souls. The symbols we use to express our patriotism, faith, love, and even socioeconomic status, are simply an outward expression of the desire we [...]
The Creative Drain Continues

After reading the story The Day the Music Died in The State today, about how Richaland County just shut down all of the bands that practice at the Sumter Street Storage sheds, I really can’t help but wonder what can be done to help make this area more friendly to the creative community. The [...]
The Week in Pictures Oct. 30 – Nov. 6

As I checked my Facebook page before heading out for a 12 hour photo day on Saturday, I was a bit perplexed when I saw that friend and fellow shooter Chris Keane had left me a note for me to check out MSNBC’s The Week in Pictures for Oct. 30 – Nov. 6, 2008. Much to [...]
